AFL: Fremantle to become second club to honour Sir Doug Nicholls
Fremantle Dockers to play as Walyalup Football Club
Indigenous rounds in 2023
Fremantle will become the second AFL club to honour the late Sir Doug Nicholls with a dedicated guernsey. The Dockers will run out as the Walyalup Football Club in the AFL and AFLW Indigenous rounds in 2023.
The club's decision was announced on Sunday, with current captain Alex Pearce set to lead the team out in the new guernsey. The Walyalup Football Club name was chosen in consultation with the local Noongar community.
Nicholls was the first Aboriginal person to play in the VFL and is considered one of the greatest players of all time. He was also a prominent civil rights activist and was knighted in 1972.
