Breaking News: Raila Odinga Presents Candidacy for African Union Commission Chairmanship

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Seeks to Lead Continental Body

Updated: July 8, 2024

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has officially presented his candidacy for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission. The announcement was made during the East African Community Council of Ministers retreat in Zanzibar on July 7, 2024.

Odinga, the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, has a long and distinguished career in Kenyan politics. He served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and is widely respected both at home and abroad.

The African Union Commission is the executive body of the African Union, a continental organization that promotes cooperation and integration among African nations. The chairmanship of the commission is a prestigious and influential position.

Odinga's candidacy has been met with mixed reactions. Some observers believe that he has the experience and leadership qualities necessary to lead the African Union, while others question whether he is the best candidate for the job.

The election for the African Union Commission chairmanship will be held later this year. The winner will replace current chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad.
